SL Controls ‘ECubers™’ Children’s Workshop for Engineers’ Week 2016
On Saturday, March 5th as part of Engineers’ Week 2016, we hosted a special engineering event for children aged 10 to 13 at Sligo IT.
Engineers Week is a week-long programme of nationwide events that aims to create a positive awareness and spark enthusiasm about the engineering profession to people of all ages, especially children and students.
Children are Engineering our Future
Having worked in engineering and technology for more than 15 years, we at SL Controls are becoming more and more aware of a gap emerging in the education system to cater for future requirements of the industry.
One of our founders, Shane Loughlin, a passionate educator himself, set up SL Control’s ‘ECubers’ in 2014 to address this issue. Run through Sligo IT, ‘ECubers’ aims to help foster the technical skills required for a career in engineering using all-round children’s favourite, LEGO.
Well-known as providing a pathway to engineering, LEGO allows children to exercise creativity and learn the fundamentals of engineering in a fun environment.
The event on Saturday saw over 20 local Sligo children come to the ‘ECubers’ Open Day at Sligo IT where they got to put their engineering ideas and skills into practice with LEGO under the expert guidance of Keith Moran and Shane Loughlin from SL Controls.
The Building Blocks of a Successful Engineering Career
Ireland has a serious shortage of young people studying engineering and we are thrilled to take any opportunity to promote the industry and let young girls and boys know that engineering is a great career with fantastic prospects.
Through the ECubers™ workshop, we shared our knowledge with the young attendees and everyone had the chance to build, program and invent better equipment using the fun, flexible and colourful LEGO TECHNIC and LEGO MINDSTORMS products.
With demand increasing for good engineers worldwide, SL Controls will continue working to ensure Ireland maintains its high standard of education in the field and to attract more students to study in the area of engineering.
We hope that through ‘ECubers™’ we will excite and entice the next generation into a career in engineering. How would you attract new talent to the industry? Share your thought with us on Twitter and LinkedIn.
